Varha Mask - Bronze
This brass bhuta mask, portraying the wild boar Panjurli originates from Coastal Karnataka. Panjurli is depicted with erect ears, an extended tongue, and a raised band encircled by lines of circles on the head. Following this, there are rows of smaller and larger cobra hoods, with four of the larger ones on top showing signs of partial damage over time.
According to a local legend, villages in Coastal Karnataka faced challenges with boars damaging cultivated lands. In response, farmers began worshiping and offering tributes to Panjurli, the spirit embodied as a boar. Their hope was that by appeasing Panjurli, the spirit would deter wild animals from invading their fields.
